Applewood Hills & Heights Residents' Association (AHHRA)

Applewood Residents Caring for Our Community

The Creation of the Applewood Hills & Heights Residents' Association (AHHRA)

In 2014, the Applewood Residents’ Committee (ARC) was established by a group of residents who were concerned about the impact of plans being made to replace the grass school field with artificial rubber crumb turf which would include permanent lighting and using a 80 ft dome over the field 6 months of the year at the Applewood Height Secondary School (AHSS) located at Bloor & Tomken. This project would be a joint business venture between the Peel District School Board (PDSB) and Razor Management.

The majority of the community believed that such a facility was not suitable nor needed at this residentially zoned area. Residents united and made great efforts in bringing awareness of the project’s visual and overall impact to the established Applewood Hills & Heights communities through the community meetings prior to construction. Fortunately, the plans for a dome did not proceed and the school field remained unchanged.

In late March 2018, AHSS students were given a letter that the PDSB in contract with Community Sports Partners (CSP) were going to begin construction in late April to install an artificial turf field, walking/running track, LED lighting and fencing that would be ready for school use in September of the same year. Members of the ARC learnt of this indirectly and immediately reunited to address the issue and learn more of how such a project would impact the community since there was no community meetings held by PDSB or the City prior to any decisions being made by the PDSB. Therefore, the ARC felt it was necessary for our community to become as informed as possible. Based on the information researched it was found that the lack of community consultation and lack of transparency by both the City of Mississauga and PDSB of how the decision for this ‘revitalized’ project came about, many unanswered questions remained.

Several streets/residences surrounding this now commercialized school field would be (and are) directly affected by the 4 – 80 ft high stadium light poles which would be (and are) allowed on until 11 pm daily. Both the light spill and increase of noise needed and neeeds to be addressed.

Thus, the Applewood Residents’ Committee was re-established and the decision to create the Applewood Hills & Heights Residents’ Association was founded.
